writer's amnesia
have you ever gone back to something you wrote a while ago and thought, "who wrote this??" this experience can either induce a sweet surprise or a gag reflex. i'm not sure which i had when i went back to my prospectus working draft after an entire month of absence from writing. i do NOT recommend such long breaks, even for such great excuses as a holiday at a lake house. you come back with fewer brain cells and even less memory of all the hopeful and amorphous thoughts that held you back from writing them down. now i can't write AND i can't remember what i wanted to write. someone very wise recently told me that a complete inability to get the brain working after a holiday means that it was a great holiday. your brain rested fully without interference from thoughts of work so when you get back into the swing of things, your brain will be refreshed and invigorated to tackle any puzzle.
